Difficult times are here.

Thus far, workers have been shielded from the worst economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic because of substantial financial from the Government.

But this cannot go on indefinitely. Retrenchments will rise – inevitably – as the economies of the world are disrupted.

NTUC Sec-Gen Ng Chee Meng said that NTUC is working with companies to preserve by first exploring all cost-cutting options.

“I trust that both unions and employers will approach these exercises with transparency and in mutual good faith,” he said.

NTUC calls for Fair of the Singaporean Core

When retrenchment is unavoidable, the top is to ensure that companies treat workers fairly and with dignity, according to the Fair Retrenchment Framework that NTUC proposed in July, said Mr Ng.

The framework includes protecting the Singaporean core of the workforce.

NTUC reiterates that retrenchments should be the last resort for companies. Before considering retrenchments, as an early intervention, companies should work with unions and workers to find ways to preserve as many as possible and minimise downtime to ensure that the companies have the manpower capacity to seize business when the economy recovers.

Mr Ng said that unions, together with NTUC’s Job Security Council and Employment and Employability Institute, will do their best to match affected workers to and ensure they receive as needed for them to take on new jobs.

Companies should also come onboard NTUC Job Security Council (JSC) to provide necessary to workers who may be or are affected by the retrenchments and help them seek new employment and training for new that are required for new jobs.
