Singaporeans respond to new restrictions ahead of CNY 2021 celebration

CNY 2021

Ahead of the Chinese New Year (CNY) 2021 celebration and in view of the increasing number of community cases with clusters formed in recent days, the Multi-Ministry Taskforce (MTF) decided to calibrate the pace and scale at which certain activities in the community can resume.

New measures were announced on 22 Jan. They include a cap of 8 distinct visitors per household per day. This will take effect from 26 January 2021. Individuals must also limit themselves to visiting at most two other households a day. The maximum group size for social gatherings outside the house will remain at 8 people for now.

Are Chinese Singaporeans disappointed with the measures? Are they supportive? Following the announcements, these are some reactions gleaned from online.

What’s there to be disappointed?

It pays to be disciplined. Learn from the world.

Not disappointed at all. Look at the big picture.

Children will miss their Hongbaos. Relief for adults!

Don’t let this be the last CNY. Every day is CNY when the pandemic is over.

Total support. Takes only a few errant clowns to undo things.

Dress up! Do a zoom CNY 2021 gathering. It can be memorable.

Don’t complain. Our Malay brothers and sisters did not get to do any visitation last year.

There’s always the freedom fighter who thinks freedom is more important than anything else.

To Jerome Ong, I give him this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt:

Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.

A delayed CNY celebration?

I say, let’s have a NATIONAL day of celebration when the pandemic is over.

Stay safe, folks. There will be increased transmission risks in the community during the upcoming CNY 2021.  So it is important that everyone cooperates with the new measures.

Get vaccinated when your turn comes. 🙂
